It is dual purpose! It measures approximately 10g of the dry mix, which is the amount to add to approximately one quart of water when making the decoction. Then after the decoction is made, you can also use it to measure the liquid dosage. Add up to 2 times or more water to your decoction serving. I add a little more, so my cup is full enough to make the tea hot and enough to sip for a little longer! The two-step straining through first the lid and then the strainer is sufficient to remove just the right amount of sediment while allowing the smallest pieces to pass through as Rene Caisse's did. It is normal to have sediment on the bottom of the jar after straining. The funnel has a detachable narrow stem for use with bottles, or remove it for use with jars.
